The Best Pubs In & Around Arundel
There’s something about Sussex pubs that feels especially comforting after a long countryside walk, a day spent exploring the coast or an afternoon at Goodwood.
Around Arundel, some sit tucked beside rivers and rolling hills, others hidden inside historic villages with low beams, roaring fires and gardens made for slow summer lunches. Whether you’re searching for a proper pint after walking the South Downs or somewhere atmospheric for a long Sunday roast, this corner of West Sussex is filled with excellent places to settle in for a few hours.
Here are a few of our favourites near Longmace House.
The historic Norfolk Arms in Arundel, originally built between 1783–1785 and now Grade II* listed. Once owned by the Duke of Norfolk and formerly known as the Norfolk Hotel, the inn remains one of Arundel’s most recognisable historic landmarks. Photograph by David Brogan.
The Norfolk Arms
Positioned beside the gates of Arundel Castle, The Norfolk Arms is one of the town’s most recognisable historic pubs — full of old-world character and perfectly placed after an afternoon exploring Arundel’s winding streets and antique shops.
Inside, traditional interiors and cosy corners give it the atmosphere of a classic English inn, while outside, the views towards the castle and surrounding town make it an especially lovely stop on slower weekends in Sussex.
For guests staying at Longmace House, it’s an easy walk away and ideal for everything from a relaxed drink after arriving in town to long lunches during autumn and winter weekends in Arundel.
The Black Rabbit
Set beside the River Arun beneath Arundel Castle, The Black Rabbit is probably one of the area’s most iconic pub settings.
With riverside views stretching across the wetlands and South Downs beyond, it’s especially beautiful in summer when people spill out onto the terrace after countryside walks. Expect classic pub dishes, local ales and one of the best outdoor pub settings in West Sussex.
It’s also perfectly placed for combining with a riverside walk back towards Arundel.
The George At Burpham
Tucked away in the tiny village of Burpham, this is the sort of pub people dream of stumbling across.
The George feels wonderfully traditional. Low ceilings, open fires, timber beams and a relaxed atmosphere that hasn’t been overdesigned or polished into something too perfect. Surrounded by some of the South Downs’ best walking routes, it’s ideal after a long afternoon outdoors.
The drive from Longmace through the Sussex countryside alone is worth doing. Oh – and this place will serve you up a superb Sunday roast… If you can bag yourselves a table.
The Parsons Table
More intimate and quietly refined, The Parsons Table brings a slightly more modern take to the traditional countryside pub.
Known for seasonal menus, excellent wine and beautifully presented food, it’s the kind of place suited to slower evenings and long lunches rather than a quick drink before heading home.
For guests staying at Longmace House during a romantic weekend or special occasion, this is a lovely one to book ahead for.
The White Swan
Situated just outside the centre of Arundel, The White Swan offers exactly the sort of relaxed pub atmosphere that works brilliantly after a day exploring the town. Pop in on your way home from Chichester, Portsmouth or anywhere west of Arundel!
A good mixture of locals, visitors and cosy interiors gives it an easy warmth, while its central location makes it ideal for guests wanting somewhere to stop for a pint on the way back to Longmace House.
The White Hart
Walk past the Post Office and over the bridge and on your left you’ll soon find this local favourite. Part historic coaching inn, part good old British boozer, this spot blends old Arundel character with a quirky, down-to-earth atmosphere. Fancy a board game by the open fire? This is the place!
Perfect for evening drinks or dinner after visiting the beach or the South Downs, it’s another excellent option within easy reach of the house and works particularly well for guests wanting something nearby with plenty of village charm. And the best part? The chippy opposite – a must-stop on the walk home!
Enjoy Slow Evenings In Sussex…
One of the nicest things about staying at Longmace House is how easily days seem to slow down here.
Morning coffees become riverside walks, afternoons drift into pub lunches and evenings end beside the fire back at the house. Whether you’re visiting for an event at Goodwood, exploring the Downs or simply escaping London for the weekend, Arundel’s pubs are very much part of what makes this part of Sussex feel so special.
And luckily, many of the very best are right on our doorstep.
